Spring Semester 2011 Orchestra Notes

The second semester of the Avon Symphony Orchestra’s Inaugural Season is underway!  We are feverishly rehearsing through a “snowmegeddon-like” schedule in preparation for our first ever performance as a high school symphony at ISSMA Organizational Contest.  Below is some very important information that will get us through the remainder of the school year.

ISSMA Preview Concert and ISSMA Contest Information

The Symphony Orchestra will perform 2 times during the week of April 4^th.  The ISSMA Preview Concert will be on Thursday, April 7^th in the AHS Auditorium.  ISSMA Organizational Contest will be held on Friday, April 8^th OR Saturday April 9^th.  We are requesting a performance date on Friday, but ISSMA will dictate whether we perform on Friday or Saturday.  Please keep both dates open until we have confirmation from ISSMA.  As a reminder, all performances are a required part of the Orchestra curriculum and worth a test grade.  ISSMA Contest is worth 2 test grades.

ISSMA Rehearsals

We have a very limited amount of rehearsals with the woodwinds and brass to prepare for ISSMA and only 2 rehearsals with percussion before ISSMA.  Unlike the band program where students are expected to attend evening rehearsals throughout the school year, we have just a handful of evening rehearsals.  These rehearsals are vital to the success of the program and are each worth a quiz grade.  Please mark the following rehearsals on your calendar for the Spring Semester.

Avon Orchestra Website Launches!!!

Thanks to Mrs. Habig and members of the Avon Orchestra Leadership Council, we are proud to announce the launching of our new website!  Like our orchestra program, the website is a work in progress and will grow in content as the program grows.  The website should be your “go to” place to confirm rehearsals, performances and other important information.  Please visit us often at www.avonorchestra.com

Avon Symphony Orchestra Formalwear

Within the next few weeks, members of the ASO will receive information on purchasing concert wear for the spring season.  Ladies have already been fitted for concert dresses and gentlemen will go through that process in the coming weeks.  Stay tuned for more information!

Orchestra Pictures

Later this spring, the Fred L. Boyd Digital Imaging Group will be taking individual pictures of Avon Sinfonia Members.  We will also create a composite of the individual pictures that will forever hang in the walls of Avon High School to commemorate our Inaugural Orchestra.  We will create a new composite every 3 years to chronicle the growth and history of the orchestra program.  More information to follow.

Music for All Summer Symposium

Last summer, several of our students attended the Music for All Summer Symposium and we are hoping for an even larger Avon presence this summer!  The Summer Symposium will be held from June 20^th to June 25^th at Ball State University in Muncie.  The Summer Symposium is one of the nation’s largest summer music camps and has a mission of providing positively life-changing experiences for thousands of young people.  Mr. Westman will be at the Symposium and is looking forward to an exciting week of music making!  More information can be found at www.musicforall.org/what-we-do/summer-camp
