About Matt Abbey
Matt Abbey is an Avon-based music educator and trumpet player, being appointed in 2023 as Assistant Director of Bands at Avon High School. Prior to his high school appointment, Mr. Abbey was the band director at Avon Middle School South for the 2022-23 school year, and has progressively worked more and more with the high school’s Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and Indoor Winds since starting on the Marching Black and Gold hornline instructional staff in the Fall of 2018.
A California native, Matt attended Foothill High School in Pleasanton, CA before attending community college locally and later transferring to Butler University in Indianapolis, where he and his family relocated to in the Spring of 2018. Matt graduated from Butler in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. During his time at Butler, Matt was a leading member of the trumpet studio, including his service as principal trumpet for the university’s Wind Ensemble in the Fall of 2018 under the direction of Col. Michael Colburn. Matt has over 17 years of playing experience and performs as a freelance trumpet player in his available time.
Matt has served as a member of the brass staff for the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps since 2020. Prior to joining the instructional staff, Matt was a member of the trumpet section for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, as well as serving as a trumpet section leader for the 2017 season.
